Category: 🖥️ - Difficulty: 🟠

Make a contribution to an Open Source ham radio software package.
This does not necessarily have to be a source code contribution!
You can suggest a documentation improvement, file a bug report, submit a feature request, or if you're out of ideas, make a donation.
OpenSource.radio is a good place to find Open Source projects. You may also want to browse GitHub for ham radio projects as a starting point.

2025-02-25 22:36:22ww0cj@mastodon.hams.social1Working on it...This week I'm semi-tackling HC24 - but not sure if my actual meaningful work will be done & merged by Sunday when I usually blog about it.I'm adding in support for lookups via Hamcall.dev, and am fixing one bug and adding a new "major" feature. Will add a bit more detail in the following post if interested.#hamchallenge #hamradio #opensource #golang @hamchallenge
2025-06-08 16:23:35ian@mastodon.radio20Success!It may be a bit early but I'm claiming success in Ham Challenge week 24: Make a contribution to an open source ham radio software package. That's pretty much all I've been doing this weekend! That makes another set of four, so you can read the full details of that plus the last three challenge weeks on my blog: https://ianrenton.com/blog/52-week-ham-radio-challenge-roundup-weeks-21-24/#HamChallenge HC24S
2025-06-09 18:20:25mcdanlj@social.makerforums.info11Success!#HC24S — Over the past few days, I made and improved a PR adding Field Day support to the Open Source #MorseWalker #CW drill app.It hasn't yet been merged, but you can practice for Field Day and leave any feedback in the PR or in this thread here.So delighted that W6NYC Henry released Morse Walker as Open Source, enabling my small contribution.

2025-06-09 19:53:35g7kse@mastodon.radio17Success!Time to catch up on some ham challenge stuff.Contribute to an open source ham radio software package. I don't really know how to code stuff, so I contributed some words to the SatNOGS database. Just searched for some missing fields and filled them in for them. Does that count? I reckon so because it improves documentation.HC24S
2025-06-10 05:19:42K3LOE@mastodon.radio7Working on it...Not a coder, so I'll use another path for #HC24. I'm thinking about making a donation.Thought #1: give to the software I've used almost every day since getting a digimode station up, WSJT-X.But it doesn't seem inventor Joe Taylor made it easy to donate! Not in software menus, not on his website, not in user guide, no mention in the groups.io archives. Thankful for his service! So I guess I'll move on to Thoughts #2 and #3...?!#HamRadio #WSJTX #DigiMode #K1JT #opensource @hamchallenge
2025-06-10 23:11:44K3LOE@mastodon.radio7Working on it...Welp, Thought 2 for #HC24 was to donate to #GridTracker since I've used that almost as much as WSJT-X, but N0TTL says "We are no longer accepting donations. Thank you to those that did, it really helped when we needed it the most!" - https://gridtracker.org/index.php/donateOn their Discord, N0TTL elaborates: "donations lead to demands. 😉" So onto Thought #3 which is actually the most interesting. But I'm very thankful for such a generous software development community!#HamChallenge #HamRadio
2025-06-10 23:35:46DJ5CW@social.darc.de19Success!This week's #hamchallenge is to make a contribution to an Open Source ham radio project. Since I am currently exploring Not1MM by @mbridak and I found a little bug in it during WPX CW, I fixed it and submitted a pull request: https://github.com/mbridak/not1mm/pull/336 #HC24S
2025-06-11 05:12:22K3LOE@mastodon.radio7Success!I'm now happy to bring this tiny #HamChallenge effort to a successful conclusion after 2 failed attempts! Also happy to get creative on this one by contributing a donation to @OpenResearchIns, an "Exemplar of Open Research and Development."In addition open source values and projects, their leadership on #219MHz, with an explainer + call to action + compelling expert public comment, gives me a lot of confidence.https://www.openresearch.institute/2025/04/01/fcc-filing-for-219-mhz-rules-changes-from
